Regiunile istorice ale României / Romania’s historical regions -- Learn Romanian Geography

An overview of the historical regions of Romania, based on România Mare, or Greater Romania. This was the largest extent of territory that Romania has achieved, during Regatul României, or Kingdom of Romania. That period ended with World War II when Russia and Germany and Ukraine carved off pieces of Romanian territory.

The regions are:

• Banat
• Crișana
• Maramureș
• Transilvania -- Banat, Crișana and Maramureș are usually taken together as part of Transilvania
• Bucovina -- the northern part is currently part of Ukraine
• Basarabia -- Historically this was part of Moldova. At the beginning of WWII, Russia took the part beyond the Prut River, then lost that land to the Germans, only to regain that land after WWII to form Moldova SSR. That land became the Republic of Moldova after the fall of the Soviet Union.
• Moldova -- To confuse matters, this is a region of Romania proper that is to the south-west of the Prut River.
• Oltenia -- Lesser Wallachia
• Muntenia -- Greater Wallachia. Together with Oltenia, these form Wallachia or Țara Românească, a historical and geographical region in the south of Romania.
• Dobrogea -- This region has been split between Bulgaria and Romania for hundreds of years. Currently Bulgaria rules the southern-most portion of Drobrogea.
